What an “Exbeerience”! Lion Nathan’s Malt Shovel Taphouse brand has opened with a bang in Birtinya on the beautiful Sunshine Coast and Serenity Made was the proud supplier of the Bar Furniture and Restaurant Furniture. The unofficial opening on the 9th of October set the mood with a few rounds of some local craft beers straight from the tap while live music upped the ambience as guests flowed in to appreciate the newest water-hole on the Sunshine Coast. Hosted and brought together by the gracious Ian Van Der Woude and Michelle Christoe, the night was truly a celebration of a culmination of meticulous planning, coordination, design, sweat and tears.
Ian and Michelle originally operated the successful Night Quarter on the Gold Coast. With the support of Stocklands they decided to bring their eat-street styled market to the Sunshine Coast and connect it with a pub. And who better to provide a local than Lion Nathan with their Malt Shovel brand.
Piecing it together with the help from the talented team at Ignite Architects, and the hands-on crew from Unita, the Malt Shovel Taphouse came along in leaps and bounds. The largest requirement of the hospitality furniture selection was to pull together, match and flow with the overall design. With inspiration and input from Stocklands design teams and Ignite’s architects, Ian joined us in China to nut-out the restaurant furniture selection and come up with the pieces you can see there today. With all the choices and elements to consider, we think he chose well.
Outside Bar Furniture
The first place to greet you and take notice of when you enter the Malt Shovel Taphouse is the outdoor areas and the outdoor bar furniture that frame the entrance. Separated from the street with metal fencing and a stainless steel grill designed to match the one above the bar, this is the perfect place to suck-up the local scene while sharing a drink with friends.
If you are a wood connoisseur, the first thing you will notice is the oiled teak slat table-tops and matching benches. Perfect for outdoor use, the teak slats are tastefully paired with dark gray aluminium frames, a colour theme that carries throughout the whole venue.
Alfresco Bar Furniture
Near the entrance to the Malt Shovel, the alfresco bar area has a lighter fee and the alfresco bar furniture helps that. Black, metal stools and metal wire tables give the feeling of a sleek environment. Framing the area are the black, metal SHS framed dividers. With wooden box inserts, these stylish dividers serve a variety of purposes throughout the venue, including decorative (such as plant displays), separating areas, and displaying menus.
Main Bar Furniture and Bar Area Furniture
With a wooden bar top, timber-coloured fans and a concrete-coloured tiled floor, finding the right bar furniture for the bar area required an almost industrial touch. The silvery navy emeco stools tied these elements together well with their splendid dark timber seats.
The timber-topped tables were a special addition. After a hard week at work, sucking down a good craft beer needs a good high table to support the yarns that we Aussies like to spin. What better than a dark, solid, hard-wood timber top with strong-iron pipe legs and an industrial galv-wash to share some banter over.
Second Bar Dining Furniture
Dining always needs a little more class and something a bit more family friendly so the bar dining furniture is important. The Penny-round table tops are almost reminiscent of a little restaurant in one of the backstreets of Italy’s Positano, tied into the Malt Shovel décor with their attractive timber edging.
With a comfort that a hard-wood seat doesn’t usually offer, the navy chairs provide the perfect dining chair experience. And as a matching piece to the navy stools they help to keep a constant theme.
Internal Alfresco Furniture
The internal alfresco furniture pulled the area together beautifully! Manufacturing the custom booth seating / banquette seating (designed by Ignite) came with a set of challenges but turned out superbly. The black, powder coated SHS iron frame was perfectly complemented by the dark ash timber flowing down the back and over the seat. The charcoal grey cushions, matching the cushions on the free standing chairs, gave that little bit extra to the design.
The dark-grey HPL tops with aluminium bases perfectly match the free-standing wire chairs. The entire area makes for a perfect place to retreat to when things around the bar get a little too rowdy or you just need a place to sit and enjoy a wine.

Stay Tuned for Ian and Michelle’s Night Quarter set to really pump up the Coast’s music and social scene. Due to open in 2020, you will need to wait to see this special treat the Sunshine Coast has been aching for for so long. With what the owners have done with the Malt Shovel, you can be guaranteed Night Quarter is sure to be a blast!
